Elizabeth J. “Betty” Canterna, of Freeport passed away on Friday, March 1, 2024 in Oertel Care Center of Concordia Lutheran Ministries, Jefferson Twp. She was 99 years old. Betty was born August 25, 1924 to Dominic and Isabelle (Demme) Canterna, and was a lifelong member of St. Mary, Mother of God, Roman Catholic Church, Freeport. She graduated from Freeport High School in 1941, and worked at the former Devereaux Motor Sales, Freeport after graduation, followed by employment as the Freeport Borough Secretary for 23 years, from 1975 until 1998. Betty also volunteered for many years at St. Mary’s Church, the Freeport Area Meals on Wheels, and the Four Corners Unit of the American Cancer Society.
She is survived by numerous special nieces and nephews. In addition to her volunteer work, Betty enjoyed following sports activities of her brothers, nephews, and nieces. Betty was predeceased by her parents and her brothers and their wives, Nicholas (Lucy), Charles (Margaret), Albert (Terry), Domenic (Freda), William (Jeanne) and Oland “Dodo” (Shirley), three nephews, three nieces, and a great-niece.

Family and friends may call from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 7th at the DENNIS J. DAUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 324 Fourth Street, Freeport, where Prayers of Transfer will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 8th followed by her Christian Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary, Mother of God, Roman Catholic Church, Freeport with her pastor, Reverend Richard J. Kosisko, JCL as celebrant. Committal ceremonies and burial will follow in the St. Mary Cemetery. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Betty’s life.
