Alan Clair Thompson

Alan Clair Thompson, 55, of South Buffalo Township died Saturday, October 24, 2015 while in the care of Good Samaritan Hospice, Cabot. 

Born January 5, 1960 in Natrona Heights, PA, Alan was the son of Dave and Shirley (Hoak) Thompson. 

Following graduation in 1978 from Freeport Area High School, Alan embarked on a successful and fulfilling 37-year career on the river. Alan was hired by Davidson Sand and Gravel in 1979 as a deck hand and it was there in 1983 that he attained his pilot's license, and continued with Davidson until 1993. He then took a pilot position with Premier Marine and worked there through 1995, when he took a pilot position with Industrial Terminal Service. In 2006 Alan accepted a position with Campbell Transportation Company and until the time of his illness served as Captain of the M/V Oliver C. Shearer. 

While Alan took great pride in his position as Captain, he most enjoyed that his work allowed him to be outdoors. Alan had an appreciation for the power and beauty of nature, and when not working could be found enjoying the activities he loved most. He was an avid and accomplished hunter, and enjoyed competing and shooting sporting clays with the South Buffalo Sportsmans Club. Reloading his own ammunition became a social event shared with close friends. He was a proud Life Member of the NRA. Alan's home was also a source of great pride where he relished in watching and photographing the wildlife that shared his property. 

Al was a soft-spoken, warmhearted bear of a man that will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his sisters, Cynthia Thompson, of South Buffalo Township, Cheryl Thompson, of Slippery Rock; brother, Mark Thompson and wife, Beth, of Freeport; niece, Emily Thompson, of Philadelphia; and aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. 

Alan was preceded in death by his parents. 

Family and friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at the Dennis J. Daugherty Funeral Home, 324 Fourth Street, Freeport. 

Additional visitation will be from 10 AM until the time of funeral services at 11 AM on Wednesday, October 28, 2015, at the Daugherty Funeral Home, with the Rev. Edward Gray officiating. 

Interment will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell, PA.
