David D Murphy, 81, of Cabot, Winfield Twp. (Butler County) passed away on Saturday, June 17, 2023 in Allegheny UPMC—Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh with his family by his side. He was born June 8, 1942 in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania to the late David Austin and Freda M. (Yoder) Murphy.
Dave graduated from Fort Cherry high school in 1960, and received his BS in Industrial Arts at California University of PA.
He served in the US Air Force for 8 years with one overseas tour during the Vietnam war.
Dave taught industrial arts at Grove City and Fox Chapel schools. He worked at J and L Steel Southside Works, and LTV Steel in Youngstown, OH in the personnel department.
He finished his professional career as Director of Human Resources for Allegheny Ludlum, Brackenridge, prior to his retirement in 2003. David served as a lay pastor from 2008 until 2018 for Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church of Templeton and Concord Presbyterian Church of Dayton, PA.
He was a member of the Freeport Presbyterian and Saxonburg Memorial Presbyterian Churches, where he served as an elder and Sunday school teacher.
Dave was also a former member of the Freeport Area Kiwanis Club. Dave had many talents and enjoyments, living life to the fullest. He was an avid reader, enjoyed woodworking, painting, and more. He was considered a “hobbyist”. His largest hobby accomplishment was building a boat, which brings us to his true avocation in life, fishing off the shores of Emerald Isle, NC.
Dave leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife of 60 years, whom he married on June 15, 1963, J. Karen (Revella) Murphy of Winfield Twp., his son, David (Stacey) Murphy of London, OH, his daughter, Jennifer M. (Lysle) Kapp of Sarver, his grandchildren, Kaylyn, Hannah, Austin, Leah, Marshall, Ethan, his two great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Henry and soon to be Sullivan. He was preceded in death by his parents mentioned above, his brother, Richard “Dick” Murphy.
Family and friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 pm on Friday, June 23rd in the DENNIS J. DAUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 324 Fourth Street, Freeport, 724-295-3100. Additional viewing will be held on Saturday, June 24th from 9:30 am until the time of funeral ceremonies at 10:30 am in the Saxonburg Memorial Presbyterian Church 100 West Main Street, Saxonburg, with his pastor, Reverend Douglas M. Dorsey officiating.
Burial will follow in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Twp., Washington County with full military honors.
