Joseph Berg Jr. Obituary

Joseph “Joe” Berg, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 7, 2026. He had recently celebrated his 92nd birthday, which honored his well-lived life.

He was born on February 16, 1934, in Wilkinsburg, PA. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1952. On May 19, 1954, Joe enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country with pride. He eventually earned the rank of IC3 during his military service. His service time enabled him to travel the world, including extended stops in San Diego, Okinawa, and other Pacific islands. He was honorably discharged on May 7, 1958. Less than a year later, he married the love of his life, Antoinette, on May 2, 1959. They initially settled in East Liberty before moving into their forever home in Allison Park. Joe proudly worked as a Letter Carrier for the United States Postal Service for over thirty years, until retiring in 1997.

In the late 1990s, Joe joined a friendship group called “The Rogues.” The Rogues would often get together to play bocce as well as games of cards. Joe also enjoyed watching Pittsburgh sports, especially the Pirates, Penguins, and Steelers. When his children were young, he often took them to baseball and hockey games. He also served as his son’s baseball coach. When he became a grandfather, he was equally devoted to his grandchildren, all of whom he loved very much. He also took it upon himself to teach his grandchildren how to drive and parallel park in his Honda Civic. Joe was a major dog-lover. He formed a powerful bond with his daughter’s yellow English lab named Bubba. More recently, he has showered his grandsons’ dogs Reilly, Aston, and Enzo with love, affection, and treats that he specifically bought for each of them. Joe loved reading about history, particularly military history. He would take notes about the books while he read them and then discuss them with his grandsons. He was also known for cutting news articles out of the newspaper to share with others. In his later years, Joe became an avid user of jigsaw puzzles and proudly displayed the difficult puzzles that he completed.

Joe and Antoinette were faithful members of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (formerly Saint Mary’s of Glenshaw) parish.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Berg, Sr. and Frances Straitiff Berg, as well as his sister Mary Ann (Bill) Moore, all of whom affectionately called him “Bud” or “Buddy.”

Joe leaves behind his loving wife of nearly 67 years, M. Antoinette D’Onofrio Berg, his daughter Cynthia Stauber, and son Joseph A. Berg, as well as his three grandsons whom he loved dearly, Eric Stauber, Ryan (Beth) Stauber, and Brad Stauber. He is also survived by his nieces, nephew, and dear friends.

The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at UPMC Passavant on the 4 North Progressive Care Unit, as well as the team from Good Samaritan Hospice for the dedicated care and compassion they provided to Joe throughout the end of his journey.

Though our hearts are broken, we are forever grateful for the many years that we were given with Joe, and we feel blessed for every opportunity we had to be with him, learn from him, and love him.

In accordance with Joe’s request, there will be no public visitation or funeral ceremonies. The DENNIS J. DAUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 324 Fourth Street, Freeport. (724-295-3100) is assisting the family with cremation arrangements.
